How many calories must you burn to lose 1 pound?
You must get rid of approximately 3,500 calories to lose 1 pound of body fat. You can reach this number through dieting, exercising, or a combination of both. For example, you can cut out 500 calories from your diet every day, and over the course of a week, you'd reach 3,500 (500 calories/day x 7 days = 3,500 calories). You could instead burn these calories through various exercises.
Or you can make two small changes - cut 250 calories from your diet every day, and then add about 30 minutes of cardio training each day to burn the other 250 calories.

Americans who exercise regularly and intensely - like running for a half hour five times a week - live about 4 years longer than those who don't and have fewer disabilities, on average.
A similar study of elderly runners found that this group experienced lower rates of cancer, neurological disease, infections and heart and artery related deaths than non-runners, and were less likely to suffer from osteoarthritis or need total knee replacements than non-runners.
Beyond helping you manage your weight and combat chronic disease, exercise can also help relieve stress, depression and/or anxiety, strengthen your heart and lungs, and help you get a better night's sleep. Even more, it's a great opportunity to connect with your family or friends and have fun!
